Book Review: "Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products" by Nir Eyal

"Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products" by Nir Eyal is a thought-provoking exploration of the psychology behind building products that create user habits. In this book, Eyal presents a four-step framework called the “Hook Model” to help you create products that engage users and build long-lasting habits.

One of the strengths of this book is Eyal's ability to delve into the psychological principles that drive user behavior. He explains the concept of habit formation and how products can tap into users' motivations and desires to create habits. Eyal provides numerous real-world examples and case studies to illustrate his points, making the book relatable and applicable to various industries.

The “Hook Model” framework outlined in the book consists of four steps: trigger, action, variable reward, and investment. Eyal explains how each step is crucial in creating a cycle of repeated user engagement. He provides practical advice and techniques for implementing each step, allowing readers to apply the framework to their product designs.

Another notable aspect of "Hooked" is Eyal's exploration of ethical considerations in designing habit-forming products. He emphasizes the need for responsible design practices and discusses the potential downsides and ethical dilemmas that can arise when products become too addictive or manipulative. Eyal encourages you to consider users' long-term well-being and use their skills to create products that add genuine value to people's lives.

The book also touches on the importance of user feedback and iteration. Eyal highlights the need for continuous improvement and learning from user behavior to refine and optimize the product experience. By incorporating user feedback and making data-driven decisions, you can create products that better meet the needs and desires of their target audience.

One of the key takeaways from “Hooked” is the understanding that habit-forming products are not limited to social media or technology-based products. Eyal explains how the principles can be applied to a wide range of industries, including healthcare, fitness, and financial services, among others.

Wrapping up, this book is a compelling and insightful book that explores the psychology behind building habit-forming products. Nir Eyal's "Hook Model" framework, real-world examples, and ethical considerations make this book valuable for anyone involved in product design and development. Whether you are a designer, entrepreneur, or product manager, "Hooked" offers practical guidance and a deeper understanding of creating products that engage users and build lasting habits.

My flexible pricing model

Working with traditional freelancer/agency pricing can get complicated. My pricing model is simpler.

Simply hire me by the month at a fixed cost starting at $3k.

Need to pause the work? That’s fine. Since there aren’t any long-term contracts, we can pick things up later when the time is right.

Schedule a consultation call to discuss my other rate tiers, go over any questions you have, and walk through the next steps.

Next steps & process

Once a pricing tier has been selected, we’ll coordinate a start date. What I do next is dependent on your needs:

Create a product from the ground up

I’ll start with deep research into your industry, including investigating what competitors are doing well or not.

After synthesizing those findings, I will create a flow diagram, mapping every step of the customer journey.

From there, I focus on wireframing every core screen of the experience.

After collaborating to refine the UX, I move into UI designs, where I visually bring the product to life.

Often, creating a Design System at this stage is essential.
If needed, I also create interactive prototypes for user testing and feedback.

Once we’re happy with the design direction, I’ll finish designing as many screens as we need for a successful developer hand-off.
